Smoky Mountain Mensa, or SMM as it's usually known to its members,
is a chapter of American Mensa, Ltd. Mensa is an international society
of people who score at or above the 98th percentile on any of several
standardized tests. American Mensa has more than 50,000 members, and,
worldwide, Mensa International has over 100,000 members in more than 40
countries.
The purposes of Mensa are: (1) to identify and foster human
intelligence for the benefit of humanity; (2) to encourage research on
the nature, characteristics and uses of intelligence; and (3) to
provide a stimulating intellectual and social environment for its
members.
No two Mensans think alike, but they usually think a lot and are often
not loath to proclaim their thoughts! Mensans' opinions cover the
spectrum on politics, religion, and philosophy, and there are Special
Interest Groups (SIGs) dedicated to expression and discussion of many
of these various opinions. Mensa itself does not have any official
opinions or stands on any political, religious, philosophical or social
issue. In keeping with this, opinions expressed on this Smoky Mountain
Mensa web site are those of individual members, not those of Smoky
Mountain Mensa or American Mensa.
People are often interested in knowing what scores on tests already
taken are acceptable for admission to Mensa. Although everything is
subject to change, American Mensa has posted some acceptable
prior-evidence scores. Look at other options for joining also.
